Confederation Bridge

The Confederation Bridge links Prince Edward Island at Port Borden to the mainland at Cape Jourimain, New Brunswick, spanning the Abegweit Passage of Northumberland Strait. The two-lane highway too bridge rests on 62 piers, is 11 metres (36 feet) wide and 12.9 kilometres (8.1 miles) long, making it the longest bridge over waters that freeze in the world and the longest bridge in Canada. While pedestrians and cyclists are not permitted to cross the bridge, there is a free shuttle service available to both. Construction of the bridge started in the fall of 1993 and the bridge components were built year-round from 1994 to summer of 1996. Placements of the components began in fall 1994 until fall 1996, and the approach roads, toll plazas and final work on the structure continued until the spring of 1997. At an estimated total cost of $1 billion CDN, the bridge officially opened on May 31st, 1997.
