There are two lighthouses in Owen Sound overlooking the Georgian Bay: the Owen Sound Front Range Light and the Owen Sound Rear Range Light, though neither of them have been operational for a number of decades. Owen Sound in a city located on an inlet of Georgian Bay and, for much of its history, was a major port city known as the “Chicago of the North.” Port duties have declined dramatically, however, since the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway, which allows shipping directly to the lower lakes, and lowered costs considerably compared to transshipment via Owen Sound.
