Winter Sunrise

Sault Ste Marie is the name of two cities on the Saint Mary’s River, which forms part of the boundary between the United States and Canada. “The Sault,” (pronounced “sue”) as it is frequently referred to by those local to the area, offers a stunning sunset during winter. It is the third largest city in Northern Ontario, after Sudbury and Thunder Bay. This area was originally called “Baawitigong,” meaning “place of the rapids,” by the Ojibwa, who used the site as a regional meeting place during whitefish season in the St. Mary’s Rapids.
