The CN Tower (Canada’s National Tower or Canadian National Tower) is the tallest tower and freestanding structure in the world. Built in 1976, it is the most famous and visible landmark in Toronto, if not in Canada. Standing at 553 metres (1815+ feet) high, one can climb 1,776 metal steps to the top of the Sky Pod, 146 stories above ground. The tower features a revolving restaurant, the 360 Restaurant, as well as 1,160 square metre (12,500 square foot) Marketplace located at the foot of the tower. The main pod of the tower has a section of glass floor, where the over 2 millions people that visit the tower per year, can look directly down at the ground 113 stories below them.
The CN Tower is an important telecommunications hub as well as the centre of tourism in Toronto. Its origins, while not initially obvious, are firmly rooted in practicality. The construction boom in Toronto in the 1960’s changed the relatively flat skyline into a jagged, high-rise filled landscape. These new buildings began to cause some serious communication problems. With its microwave receptors at 338 metres (1,109 feet) and 553.33 metres (1,815 feet, 5 inches) antenna, the CN Tower solved the communication problems with ease. As a result Torontonians living in the downtown are now enjoy some of the clearest reception in North America.
