City Hall

The New City Hall, the forth city hall in Toronto, was opened on September 13th, 1965. The first city hall was destroyed by fire, the second one was temporary, and the city outgrew the third one, now known as Old City Hall. The building was constructed as a result of a world-wide architectural competition from the plans submitted by Viljo Revell of Helsinki, Finland. Unfortunately, Revell died before the opening, so the city dedicated a Commemorative Column to his memory. Built at a cost of $25 million, City Hall is located at the north end of Nathan Phillips Square, with Bay Street running on the east side, Queen Street West along the south, and University Avenue one block to the west.
