Parliament Buildings

Parliament Hill is divided up into three main buildings: The Centre Block, the East Block and the West Block. The Centre Block houses the Chambers of the House of Commons, the Senate and the Parliament Library. It easily recognized by the prominent Peace Tower, one of the best-known symbols in Canada. The East Block still remains, aesthetically, very much the same as it did at the time of Confederation (1867). The East Block features the restored offices of Sir John A. Macdonald (Canada’s first Prime Minister) along with other early statesmen. In addition, the East Block houses the offices of the members of the majority party. The West Block houses the offices for the members of parliament that are not in the majority party, and is closed to the general public.
