National Gallery of Canada

The National Gallery of Canada, one of the premiere art galleries in Canada, was first formed in 1880. In 1882, it moved into its first home on Parliament Hill, placed in the same building as the Supreme Court. It currently resides in a glass and granite building on Sussex Drive, which was constructed in 1988, with an amazing view of the Canadian Parliament buildings on Parliament Hill. The Gallery houses a large collection of various paintings, drawings, photographs and sculpture. While its focus is on Canadian art, there is a collection of works by numerous renowned European artists. The collection showcases art by the famous Group of Seven, as well as Emily Carr, Tom Thomson and Alex Colville.
