The Swissair Flight 111 Memorial is located at a place call the Whalesback, about 1 kilometre (.6 miles) from Peggy’s Cove. It is one of two memorials built to honor the victims of the Swissair Flight 111 disaster, which saw the aircraft crash into St. Margarets Bay on September 2, 1998. The crash site was about 8 kilometres (5 miles) from shore, roughly central between the tiny fishing and tourist communities of Peggy’s Cove and Bayswater. All 229 people on board were killed in the crash.
