Nova Scotia's Official Bird: The Osprey

The osprey is Nova Scotia’s official bird and a large bird of prey, ranging from 50 to 60 centimetres (20 to 24 inches) in height. It is often referred to as the “fish hawk” because it is exclusively a fish eater and can be identified by its unique fishing style. The soles of the osprey’s feet are equipped with sharp, spiny projections that enable it to get a firm hold on the slippery fish. The summer flounder is a saltwater fish; it is called a “left-sided” flatfish because both of its eyes are on the left side of its head. Both are common in and around all of Cape Breton Island and in Big Bras d’Or.
