Downtown
Yellowknife, the capital city of the Northwest Territories, is the largest city, population-wise in the territory with just under 20,000 inhabitants. Located on the north shore of Great Slave Lake, it was initially founded and settled because of the Gold Rush. Currently, Yellowknife is primarily a government town and a service centre for the diamond mines in the area (as the last of the gold mines closed in 2004).
