Fort Simpson is a great base for dog sledding in the Northwest Territories. Home to numerous dog sledding adventure companies, one can take a 1-hour dog sledding trip to a two week, guided excursion. Sleddogs, in addition to having to be able to physically pull the sled, have to have great endurance as they can travel anywhere from 8 kilometres (5 miles) to 130 kilometres (80 miles) in one day. Some popular breeds of sleddogs include the Siberian Husky, Alaskan Husky, Canadian Eskimo Dog, Mackenzie River Husky and the Chinook.
