Rowboat in Conception Bay

Conception Bay is among one of the most notable regions in all of Newfoundland. Conception Harbour and Conception Bay take their name from the Portuguese Baia de Conceicao or Baia de Comceica and was presumably given in honour of the Feast of the Conception, December 8. During the year 1500, the Portuguese explorer Gaspar Corte-Real claimed Newfoundland for Portugal under “Linea Divisionis”. Conception Bay has a vast history of settlements, such as Brigus, Harbour, and many others that were scattered throughout the Avalon Peninsula. The settlements begin with Bauline on the northeastern side and end with Grates cove on the northwestern side. Victoria is just a bit inland but is within walking distance of Carbonear, where pirates were known to frequent during the early 1600s. Victoria Village was described as a fishing village on the northern side of Conception Bay in Lovell’s Directory of 1871.
