The Walter C. Koerner Library, named for the honorary Life President of both the Vancouver Art Gallery and the Vancouver Symphony Society, was officially opened on March 10th, 1997. It totals 17,200 square metres (185,140 square feet): 7,000 square metres (75,350 square feet) of new construction and 10,200 square metres (109,800 square feet) of renovated space from the Sedgewick Library. With a cost of over $24 million dollars, and a capacity of stacks measured at over 800,000 volumes, it is the one of the main buildings that makes up the UBC Library - the second largest research library in Canada.
