Fort McMurray, located 435 kilometres (270 miles) northeast of Edmonton on Highway 63 and about 60 kilometres (37 miles) west of the Saskatchewan border, has the unofficial status of being the largest unincorporated “city” in Canada. With a population of over 60,000, Fort McMurray is officially a hamlet that belongs to the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. The average temperature in Fort McMurray is about -20°C (-4°F) in January, and +17°C (62°F) in July. On average, the hamlet of Fort McMurray receives an annual rainfall of over 330 millimetres (13 inches) and an annual average snowfall of about 172 centemetres (5.6 feet). The ever-changing weather creates some unique environmental displays, including beautiful sunsets.
